Kuvataiteen maisteri Jaana Erkkilä väittelee aiheesta

”Tekijä on toinen. Kuinka kuvallinen dialogi syntyy” perjantaina 2.3.2012 klo 12.

Vastaväittäjänä toimii professori Jouko Pullinen Tampereen yliopistosta. Kustoksena toimii professori Juha Varto taiteen laitokselta.

Tutkimus selvittää koulumaailman ja taidekasvatuksen mahdollisuuksia avata uusia taiteellisen tuottamisen keinoja oppilaiden ja opettajan vuorovaikutuksen avulla.

Taideperustaisia tutkimusmenetelmiä hyödyntävä tutkimus selvittää oppilaiden ja taiteilija-opettajan kohtaamisia kuvien välityksellä toteutuvan vuorovaikutuksen pohjalta.

Esille nousee myös kysymys tekijyydestä, kun subjektin aseman ottavat kuvat, jotka alkavat elää omaa elämäänsä.

Väitöskirja on samalla matka Pieter Bruegel Vanhemman kuvamaailmaan, jota tulkitsevat niin oppilaat kuin taiteilija-tutkijakin.

Fulbright Center awards grants for Finns going to the US

What: The Fulbright Center awards grants to Finnish applicants for the purpose of pursuing undergraduate or graduate study or for research and professional development. Call for Proposals for Symposium on Remoteness in May 2012

The symposium is a part of a project of the Baltic-Nordic Network of Remote Art & Residency Centers; however, it is open to participants from all over the world. Through the symposium we hope to build a network of remotely located centers, and learn different approaches to these unique places. For more information, and to see the other participating partners, please visit the project blog at http://remotenet.nidacolony.lt/

The symposium is a 3-day-long event (May 17-20). The contributors are invited to share their experiences working and living in remotely located art & residency centers as directors and cultural managers, and as practicing artists and participants. We are looking forward to proposals from a variety of cultural disciplines on the theme of “remoteness”, with an emphasis on community building, interaction with local inhabitants, and site specificity.

The format: The format is open; proposals can vary from lectures and workshops to performances and site-specific artworks. We are able to provide accommodation and catering to a limited number of participants. Travel expenses are subject to availability.

Deadline: Please send a short proposal (up to 500 words + visual material if needed) by March 31, 2012

Interested individuals who would prefer to take part as audience members may apply as “passive” participants by submitting a request with a short motivation letter. Unfortunately, we will be unable to cover your participation costs.

Call for 2012 Summer-Autumn Residency Applications till 15th of February

Nida Art Colony invites artists, designers, architects, curators, and art researchers to meet the coming summer and autumn on the Baltic Sea coast in the Curonian Spit National Park. The Colony was opened in March 2011 as a new branch of the Vilnius Academy of Arts (Lithuania).CALL FOR RESIDENCY APPLICATIONS: RESIDENCIES IN JUNE-DECEMBER 2012
Nida Art Colony’s remote location and beautiful surrounding landscape provide the time and inspiring solitude missing from modern urban life. A residency in Nida will meet your expectations if:
●   the intensity of urban life—curators, openings, presentations—consumes all of your time and leaves you without energy to concentrate on artistic practice;
●   you are working with site-specific projects involving local communities, reflecting on the natural and/or cultural environment;
●   you love coincidences and want to meet artists from all over the world in order to collaborate with them now or in the future;
●   you need a large space for experiments—the whole forest and beach can be your studio.

Deadline for residency applications: February 15, 2012 (applications ((please download) to be send to info@nidacolony.lt )

Dates and duration of the residencies: 1 to 4 months between June 1 and December 31, 2012. The recommended duration of a residency is 2 months.

Costs: Studio and living space rent is 412 Eur/month (June-September) and 312 Eur/month (October-December), including all taxes, use of equipment, communal spaces, bicycles and the minivan.

Grants: No grants are currently available; selected candidates are issued a letter of support for individual grant seeking.

Conditions: The Colony provides the necessary living and social conditions to ensure a comfortable and unobtrusive coexistence of the five artists-in-residence. Each of the five residencies is set out on two floors with 65 sq. m of floor space and features all the necessary facilities. Medicine in Art: Illness as creative inquiry

This seminar offers a unique transdisciplinary forum that explores medicine and notions of healing in art as a tool for social commentary and aesthetic exploration. The structure includes presentations by guest artists and scholars, audience discussion, and a workshop in which participants create new pills designed to cure sociopolitical problems.

Presenters include: Marika Orenius (DA student, Aalto University), Terike Haapoja (PhD student, Academy of Fine Arts of Finland), Ernest Truly (MFA, School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston), Kaisu Koski (DA, University of Lapland), Lisa Erdman (DA student, Aalto University)

Thematic questions for the seminar include:

– How and why does medicine inform the work of some contemporary artists?

– How might art and medical discourse work together as a catalyst for social change or political discussion?

– What is the current state of medicalization, and how might artists capitalize on this process?

– How might defining illness serve as a way of understanding culture?

The topic for the seminar is the question of what it means to “speak the truth” in art or art-based research. In a postmodern world the whole concept of truth is discredited, yet at a time of crisis the possibility of art to cut through ideologies and awaken the senses is called for, and various art forms and art-based knowledge have a major part in social movements. Thus the question of truth is entangled with questions of power, language and the public sphere.

ResearchProfessional – a database for research funding opportunities

Aalto University has now access to a database, which contains current research funding opportunities in the academic research market, across multiple disciplines, both for research projects and for personal grants. The database covers funding opportunities from all over the world, including Finland and Europe.

You can use the database through http://www.researchprofessional.com/. There are two options: Campus access without any signing in – from any computer within Aalto campus connected to LAN (or through Aalto VPN if outside the campus or on WiFi) and Sign in access after easy self-registration – from anywhere.
